The Nuclear Family are six individuals bound by fate. All were riding a late-night subway car on which the hero Transmute confronted a HISS Agent carrying a micronuke. The zealous agent detonated the bomb prematurely. Transmute acted selflessly to try and contain the explosion, limiting the massive energy discharge while trying to protect the six passengers. His efforts protected everyone else on the subway train, but he unconsciously transformed those six passengers at surface zero. From that moment on, they had powers beyond comprehension, but could not long be separated, and so was formed the Nuclear Family, striking fear and awe into the citizens of Empire City.
